For Teachers
Welcome to the Teacher Resources for Cultural Engines.
Attached to this page are ideas for activities involving the Arts: music, visual art, and writing and publishing. The activities relate to cultural organizations in the Windsor-Essex Region of Southwestern Ontario, but can be adapted for other communities with access to a community orchestra, public art gallery, and of course, a library. These activities were tested with over 90 children in November, 2012 at the Central Branch of the Windsor Public Library. Some of the activities ran concurrently on a rotating basis by dividing the students into smaller groups.
The lesson plans might refer to videos attached to this website, but if teachers have trouble accessing the Windsor Public Library’s YouTube channel at your school, you are welcome to download, convert and save the videos, but it is not necessary.
The activities are intended to adapt to the Ontario Grades 6 – 8 Language and The Arts guidelines, but can be adapted for students of varying abilities, including Secondary and Adult Literacy. This website can also be used to teach vocabulary (see our Kids’ Only activities) and comprehension to English Language Learners. Resource, School Librarians can also use the activities in libraries and Learning Commons to teach research skills. Public Service Librarians have also adapted some of the writing prompts and ideas for their Library Live, Teen Zone, and March Break programs.
Please click on the PDF links to access the activities. We hope you and your students enjoy learning about the rich cultural heritage of Windsor-Essex, Ontario!
