Those Who Served: Stories from Windsor’s WWII Veterans

Windsor Public Library is proud to share a special podcast honouring our World War II veterans.

Those Who Served: Stories from Windsor’s WWII Veterans is the latest of the Stories of Windsor podcast and draws from an original collection of oral histories housed at the Local History Branch.

The one-hour podcast features a collection of voices recorded in 1999 when staff and volunteers interviewed 51 World War II veterans from Windsor-Essex for posterity.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Approximately 1,159,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in the war. With the announcement of the war in 1939, many locals signed up to defend our country. “Those Who Served” pays homage to the brave individuals who served as air force pilots, infantrymen, privates, nurses, doctors, members of the women’s corps, as well as the personal memories of war brides and the many refugees helped by Canadians.

In addition to the podcast, all audio recordings and transcripts are available for community members to listen to and examine at the Local History Branch.

About the Stories of Windsor Podcast:

The Stories of Windsor podcast aims to tell the stories that define Windsor-Essex County. Using the unique collection of materials at the library’s Local History Branch, the hosts of Stories of Windsor celebrate the lesser-known histories of the communities along the Detroit River. Episodes can be found on Windsor Public Library’s YouTube channel and Spotify. Follow the links to listen.
