WPL Celebrates 125 Years

This photo shows the Carnegie Library, which many Windsorites remember fondly. It opened in October 1903 at the corner of Park and Victoria Streets. In 1901 City Council sought a grant from Andrew Carnegie to replace the library at Lambie’s Hall, which was no longer large enough to meet the community’s needs.

To celebrate 125 years of library service to the community, WPL is featuring photographs from the local history collection and community archive. On a daily basis for the balance of December, we will present an interesting and unique image of our city, which we hope will fascinate and entertain. On December 4 1894, Windsor Public Library first opened at Lambie’s Hall. Library users who paid five cents for a library card could select from among 5,254 books and 60 periodicals. Lambie’s Hall remained the Windsor Public Library for almost seven years, until the Carnegie Library opened in 1903.

Muir Branch Opens

The JOHN MUIR BRANCH is the newest in the Windsor Public Library system when it OFFICIALLY opened Saturday, September 28.
