To celebrate 125 years of library service to the community, WPL is featuring photographs from the local history collection and community archive. On a daily basis for the balance of December, we will present an interesting and unique image of our city, which we hope will fascinate and entertain.
Image Number 2 shows the Carnegie Library, which many Windsorites remember fondly. It opened in October 1903 at the corner of Park and Victoria Streets. In 1901 City Council sought a grant from Andrew Carnegie to replace the library at Lambie’s Hall, which was no longer large enough to meet the community’s needs. The Carnegie Library was expanded and remained the core of Windsor’s library system until 1974, when Central Library opened. The Carnegie Apartments, which now stand on the site, pay homage to the former occupant.
