Beloved Canadian author Jane Urquhart was honoured with the task of putting together a lyrical non-fiction collection of short stories to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, told through fifty objects.
Each object is rich in Canadian history. Whether it be about our iconic explorers and leaders, or personal anecdotes from her family’s past, Jane beautifully intertwines the tales of each object to speak to us as a nation.
Each object is also masterfully illustrated in black and white linear carvings on scratch-board by Scott McKowen, who lives and works in Stratford, Ontario.
As a novelist and poet combined, Jane Urquhart writes harmonic memories that symbolize Canada’s unique history. With a fascinating view point, each story enlightens us on the days of yesteryear.
A Number of Things is wonderful birthday gift to us all, especially our younger generation who may not yet know the hardships and challenges that our country, and it’s people, faced with its creation.
