The JOHN MUIR branch will be the newest in the Windsor Public Library system when it officially opens Saturday, September 28. The ceremony is scheduled for 1 pm at 363 Mill Street in Sandwich Town.
The transformation and commissioning of the 1921 Sandwich Fire Hall and Stable into a stunning 21st. century public library facility is a spectacular example of innovative planning and construction. The iconic state-of-the art facility will be a popular Sandwich destination.
The 7,400 sq. ft. branch (1,400 SF basement & 6,000 on 1st and 2nd floors) designed by architect Jason Grossi of studio g+G inc., balances library needs with the space limitations of the location. The $5.5 million facility recognizes the need for a functional library in the 21st. century, providing space for customers and technology.
City of Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says that the “design of the John Muir branch is a wonderful reflection of the Sandwich community and the passion John Muir had for the area and its history. City Council and the Library Board are proud to recognize the significant role John played in shaping Sandwich, and the impact he had on our entire community. This unique facility is a testament to his legacy. This is also the latest example of Windsor embracing new technologies and services, along with newer, more innovative facilities, to shift how we’re able to do business… and the kind of difference we’re able to make.”
Mr. Muir was Vice-Principal of General Brock Public School for 4 years in the 1970s and returned as principal from 1981 to 1987 and immediately became a leader in advocating for a public library in Sandwich. Mr. Muir passed away in July, 2016
