The literary world suffered a great loss this week. Renowned author and poet Maya Angelou passed away Wednesday, May 28, at the age of 86. Angelou was the author of numerous books, essays and collections of poetry. Renowned for her deeply personal prose and her civil rights activism, Angelou received many awards and accolades including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. In a statement provided by her son Guy Johnson, Angelou was described as “a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace.”
Among her most celebrated works are And Still I Rise, The Heart of a Woman, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘fore I Diiie. These works, along with many others by Maya Angelou, are available through the Windsor Public Library.
