Much like the recent reincarnation of 1970s muscle cars, their present day nameplates have very little in common with their predecessors. Likewise, bookmobiles from the same era bear no similarity with versions seen on the road today. They are bristling with the latest technology, innovative library programming and serve as community WIFI hubs.
With the recent purchase of a customized GMC vehicle, Windsorites have the opportunity and freedom to read, educate and discover what Windsor Public Library has to offer…wherever you live in the community. Costing $15,000 and with an additional $15,000 spent on customization, FRED as he is affectionately known, was unveiled to the community on TUESDAY, AUGUST 16.
“It’s important that Windsor Public Library take our services to where people live, work and play,” says WPL Board Chair, Dr. Peter Frise. “We are combining the iconic bookmobile experience with the many new and diverse technologies available at a 21st. century public library. Beyond that, it’s an opportunity to demonstrate just how important and relevant libraries are today, particularly to the underserviced and non-library customer.”
A variety of resources will be available on board, including programs, WIFI, access to computers and a printer, opportunities to experiment with technology from the Library Tech Hub, as well the ability for customers to borrow and return books, movies and video games. There will also be a new tool lending library for those attempting small projects at home.
WPL CEO Kitty Pope is excited about the opportunities FRED will provide. “Outreach is a fundamental service of the library. It’s important to provide the same recreational and educational materials to everyone in our community. We now have the ability to visit daycare centres, seniors homes, schools and many other public institutions plus attend community events.”
Approval for the bookmobile was contained in a Report to Windsor City Council in December 2013 titled Governance Model for the Windsor Public Library and the accompanying document Proposed WPL Service Enhancement Model. This was again confirmed in a May 2015 Report to City Council, Windsor Public Library – Facilities Renovation and Expansion Projects.
