If you’re looking for a funny and happy read to share with a child today, you should definitely give the new book by Bob Shea a chance. Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great is, itself, pretty great. Goat was just fine until that Unicorn came along, with all his fancy tricks. It seems that Unicorn does everything better than Goat, but could it be that there’s more to both of these two than meets the eye? This is a picture book that can be equally enjoyed by adults and children.
Though it may not feel like it when you go outside, summer is finally here! All of the branches of Windsor Public Library will be celebrating the summer theme of “GO!” with a variety of programs. You can find the guide to all of our locations here. The official kick-off is July 8, at Central library. Call 519-255-6770 for more information, or to be connected to your local branch to sign up today!
Each of our branches will also have available a special summer reading kit, to encourage children to keep engaged with books all summer long. Included in these kits is a “Passport to Reading,” which will allow the kids to keep track of all the books they’ve read, and receive a special sticker for each of their accomplishments. We look forward to seeing you throughout the summer months!
On Thursday, June 20, celebrations for the 2013 World Refugee Day will begin at Central Library, from 12 noon until 2:30 pm, in the children’s area. To mark the occasion, the picture book choice for today talks about one boy’s experience as a refugee in the United States. “My Name is Sangoel” by Karen Lynn Williams, tells the story of Sangoel, a child from Sudan, who feels frustrated when no one seems able to pronounce his name correctly. Place a hold today, and we hope to see you at Central Library on Thursday for the festivities!
This week’s picture book pick comes courtesy of beloved author Mo Willems. It is “That Is Not A Good Idea!”. Things don’t look good for the sweet little goose that agrees to a dinner invitation from a hungry wolf. As with other stories by Willems, don’t assume you know how this one will end! Place a hold today to find out the fates of the characters.
Here at WPL we are happy to have many picture books to share with children and caregivers. We’d like to use this site to highlight some of the great ones we have available, so keep an eye out for hidden gems! We’d also love to hear what some of your favourite picture books are, whether those you share with a child today, or past ones you loved when you were little.
Today’s pick is “Let’s Play in the Forest While the Wolf is Not Around” by Claudia Rueda. A great story that can be read or sang, this is one that the kids can easily engage with. Find it in our catalogue here. Happy reading!
