The Windsor Public Library Board supports the Ontario Government’s province-wide lockdown scheduled to begin Saturday, December 26, 2020, in an effort to stop the continued spread of COVID-19. Modified public library services that align with new mandated restrictions will be in place at all WPL locations effective Monday, December 28, 2020.
Windsor Public Library branches will open for contactless curbside pick-up only. Public access to browsing, computer access and photocopier use is suspended. All exterior book returns will remain open with materials quarantined for a 72-hour period on receipt and branches will operate under regular winter hours. Sunday hours of operation are suspended during the lockdown.
“We are totally supportive of the provincial lockdown decision”, says Councillor Rino Bortolin, chair of the WPLB. “The closure of large public spaces helps to delay the spread of the virus, which in turn helps to relieve the stress placed on the health system. The health of our customers and staff is our most important consideration and by following the lead of local and provincial health authorities, a temporary closure is the most prudent and sensible action to take.”
To place holds and pick-up materials, customers should follow the following guideline:
Place holds on library materials through the library catalogue or phone library staff at 519-255-6770 (option 1) for help choosing materials;
–You will be notified when your holds are available by email or telephone;
–To pick up your holds, drop by your library branch during regular hours. No appointment is necessary. Please have your library card ready. All materials are checked out for their regular loan period;
–Upon arrival, customers should proceed to the exterior curbside pick-up area. Staff will retrieve holds materials.
“Windsorites have been amazing in their support for WPL,” says WPL CEO Kitty Pope. “Throughout the first lockdown and our pivot to extensive digital services, statistics show that usage of our online resources climbed sharply. During this lockdown we intend to continue to serve our community because we believe in the freedom to read, learn and discover.”
Although in-person browsing is suspended, your library card provides access to online resources for all ages, which can be accessed any time, and from anywhere. Books, magazines, movies and music are available, free of charge.
Thank You WPL for providing eBooks online. Don’t know how I would deal with reading without my iPadand CloudLibrary! I am a “Low Vision” person, due to multiple retinal tears, surgically repaired by our famous LASIK eye surgeon, Dr. T. I have vision, but the retinal tear affected the central vision in my left eye. Without access to eBooks, I would be unable to read most small font in regular books, etc. With the enhancement of my iPad (colour tone, brightness, font size increase), I can easily read eBooks! Before the lockdown last year, I was an avid reader anyway, but since the lockdown and COVID restrictions of contact, reading is as vital to me as walking. Thanks aren’t enough for the services you provide the residents of Windsor/Essex County. You are lifesavers for those of us who have vision deficits! Also, without the internet, borrowing, ordering eBooks, DVD’s, and hard copy books would be much more difficult. To have a book available at the touch of my index finger is phenomenal.
Thanks for all of your services, including such prompt replies to questions and problem solving done by your staff. May you be Blessed, and best of health to you all, especially during these trying times.
Sincerely…Namaste,
Chris Luhowy
