With just 5 days before the start of new school year, this week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is of the brand new Malden Public School. This photograph was taken not long after the school was completed in 1950. The school was finished at that time with just four classrooms, almost harking back to the days of one-room schools. One of the first signs summer is winding up is the start of a new academic year. This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic was taken circa 1896 of the interior of the chemical laboratory classroom at Windsor Collegiate Institute. The school opened in 1854 as an elementary school and changed to a secondary school in 1871. In 1929, the school was renamed after local lawyer and politician J. C. Patterson. Many different types businesses are in this view, such as the People’s Store (clothing), Loblaw Groceries, Dr. P. R. Wilson, Dentist, Central Billiard Parlor and Maple Leaf Lunch across the street. The Peabody Explosion of 1915 In the early hours of 21 June, 1915, residents of Walkerville awoke to a frightening noise- the Peabody Leather Label Overall Company had been bombed.
