This bird-eye view of the west side of Downtown Windsor taken in the 1970s, very few of the buildings in this image are still standing fifty years later. The large structure in the lower left hand corner of the image is the Cleary Convention Centre before additions were added later in the 1970s. The block to the left of the Cleary was demolished to make way for the new Chrysler Office Building. The building behind the Cleary is the Windsor Star building and printing facility. THROWBACK THURSDAY

This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic was taken in the 1970s of the Art Gallery of Windsor, located on Riverside Drive West in the old Carling Brewery warehouse. The AGW was originally located in Willistead Manor in Walkerville from 1943 to 1975, when it moved to this location. In 1993, the Art Gallery of Windsor moved to Devonshire Mall when Casino Windsor leased the building. Once Casino Windsor opened its own casino, the AGW decided to demolish this structure and replace it with a new building. Today Continue Reading...

OUTDOOR MOVIES END FOR THE SEASON

With summer coming to a close, the last outdoor movie of the season is scheduled for September 23 at Optimist Memorial Park (1075 Ypres Avenue) with Luca from the Disney Pixar studio.  The fun begins at 6 pm, with the movie to begin at sundown. The state-of-the-art movie projection system to screen movies outside – at parks, community centres and other venues across Windsor – consists of a 25 ft. inflatable screen, projector, top-of-the-line sound system and an ultra-quiet generator. THROWBACK THURSDAY

This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is of the former Salvation Army Grace Hospital located at the corner of Crawford and University Avenues. The photograph was taken sometime in the early 1970s.The hospital opened its doors on February 1st, 1920. This was the first general hospital in Canada that was operated by the Salvation Army. The hospital closed in February 1st 2004, after providing 84 years of service to Windsor and Essex County. The structure was eventually demolished in the spring of 2013. This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is of the Norwich Block along Riverside Drive and Ouellette Avenue. Taken in the summer of 1976 from Dieppe Gardens. The Toronto Dominion Bank façade located at the corner of Riverside and Ouellette, had been saved to be used in a future location. As of 2022, the bank façade is still in storage. Continuing with visits to Windsor by Queen Elizabeth II in honour of her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is of the Queen’s visit to Windsor in 1959. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip visited Windsor on July 3rd, 1959 as part of her 45-day tour of Canada. Her Majesty arrived in Canada on June 18th and departed on August 1st.
