{"id":210,"date":"2013-01-30T19:25:08","date_gmt":"2013-01-30T19:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/?page_id=210"},"modified":"2013-03-13T19:36:09","modified_gmt":"2013-03-13T19:36:09","slug":"fun-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/?page_id=210","title":{"rendered":"Did You Know?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/?attachment_id=1348\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1348\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1348\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"Library ByLaw, 1894\" alt=\"Library ByLaw, 1894\" src=\"http:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Library-By-Law-1894.gif\" width=\"288\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a>A library by-law was prepared and voted on, on June 26, 1894 and accepted by the largest majority for any proposal submitted to the citizens of Windsor at that time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth Saltmarche, AGW Director begins writing art criticisms for the local papers in 1948 under the pseudonym David Mawr.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the first WSO concerts in Windsor was called \u201cConcerts for Smokes\u201d as they raised funds to send care packages such as candy and cigarettes to Windsor\u2019s armed forces overseas during WWII.<\/p>\n<p>In 1954 the\u00a0WSO, the AGW and the\u00a0WPL\u00a0take part in Centennial\u00a0celebrations for the hundredth anniversary of the City of Windsor.<\/p>\n<p>The WPL borrowed an exhibit from the Royal Ontario Museum consisting of Egyptian, Roman and Chinese potteries, embroideries, and coins in 1922.<\/p>\n<p>The price of borrowing art work from the picture lending collection in 1950 from the Willistead Art Gallery of Windsor ranged from $.25 to $1.25 a month.<\/p>\n<p>The WSO\u2019s first full-time manager in 1976 was Erling Alfee, also a double bass player.<\/p>\n<p>The Windsor Public Library worked with the <em>Windsor Star<\/em> to microfilm the <em>Windsor Star,\u00a0<\/em>the <em>Windsor Daily Star, <\/em>and the <em>Windsor Record<\/em>.\u00a0 Patrons may view copies of these papers at the library.<\/p>\n<p>The painting \u201cOwl\u2019s Head Mountain\u201d is donated to the art gallery by W.F. Herman, Hugh Graybiel, W.L. Clark and Richard Graybiel of the Windsor Star in 1964.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/?attachment_id=1961\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1961\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1961 alignright\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"Krieghoff's Owl's Head Mountain\" alt=\"Krieghoff's Owl's Head Mountain\" src=\"http:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Krieghoff-Owls-Head-Mountain.gif\" width=\"378\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The comedy troupe, The Royal Canadian Air Farce teased the WSO\u2019s musicians with threats to play a kazoo along with Dvorak\u2019s Slavonic Dance at their 1987 joint concert.<\/p>\n<p>The John Richardson Library was opened in November 7, 1928.\u00a0 John Richardson was the first Canadian born author to receive international recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Trespassers broke into Willistead Art Gallery in 1966 and punched a hole through a painting valued at about $1000.<\/p>\n<p>Full access: Jazz singer, Joe Coughlin performed from a motorized wheelchair with the WSO, featuring songs from his album, <i>Slow and Slower<\/i>, in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>From 1922 until the 1970s, the Walkerville Library, which was later named Willistead Library, was housed in Willistead Manor.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Art in the Park, W<a href=\"http:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/?attachment_id=1963\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1963\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1963 alignleft\" style=\"margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px;\" title=\"Art in the Park\" alt=\"Art in the Park\" src=\"http:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Art-in-the-Park.gif\" width=\"384\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a>indsor\u2019s annual outdoor art festival began by the AGW, enjoys its 3rd year in 1972, and over 25,000 visitors to Willistead Park.<\/p>\n<p>The WSO welcomed guests John Allan Cameron, Hagood Hardy, \u00a0Hockey Night in Canada producer Ralph Mellanby, Phil Esposito and Don Cherry in a 1981\u00a0\u201cHockey Night in Canada\u201d concert.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0In 1955, thefts of books on technological subjects were on the rise, which included cookbooks.\u00a0 Bibles were the second-most stolen books from the stacks.<\/p>\n<p>An electrical fire temporarily left the gallery without power and the essential climate control system in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>The WSO banned using real cannons during outdoor performances of Tchaikovsky\u2019s 1812 Overture after one exploded during a WSO concert in 1980.\u00a0 No one was seriously hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Library Rule #20 in 1894 was: To protect the library against loss, and to secure to all a just and equitable share in its benefits, any person who detains a work (whether bound in one or more volumes) longer than the regulations permit, shall be fined three cents for each day of detention; and pay one cent for each mailed notice.<\/p>\n<p>There were 2,900 pieces of art to transfer when the art gallery moved back to it 401 Riverside Drive West location in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: -20px 10px;\" title=\"WSO Musicians \" alt=\"WSO Musicians\" src=\"http:\/\/www.windsorpubliclibrary.com\/engine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WSO-Musicians-now.gif\" width=\"251\" height=\"359\" \/>The branch manager of the Seminole Branch resolved never to repeat one year\u2019s outdoor \u201cfun day\u201d activity on the branch\u2019s property: a spaghetti fight for children, 1994.<\/p>\n<p>The early Windsor Symphony Orchestra\u00a0relied on teenaged music students to perform as soloists.<\/p>\n<p>The volunteer committee at the AGW has their first garden tour fundraiser in 1989, which proved to be very popular and was held for many years.<\/p>\n<p>By 1934 library membership was 28,000.
