For more information read <u><a href=\"https:\/\/wind.ent.sirsidynix.net\/client\/en_US\/default\/search\/results?qu=21+things+you+may+not+know+about+indian+act&amp;te=\">21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act<\/a><\/u> by Bob Joseph.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>denied\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/indigenousfoundations.arts.ubc.ca\/marginalization_of_aboriginal_women\/\"><strong>women status<\/strong><\/a>; <strong>1869-1985<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>introduced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/indigenousfoundations.web.arts.ubc.ca\/residential-school-system-2020\/\"><strong>residential schools<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>created\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictinc.ca\/indian-act-naming-policies\"><strong>reserves<\/strong><\/a>; <strong>1876 to present day<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictinc.ca\/indian-act-naming-policies\"><strong>renamed<\/strong><\/a> individuals with European names <strong>1880-2021<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>restricted First Nations from leaving reserve without\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictinc.ca\/blog\/indian-act-and-the-pass-system\"><strong>permission<\/strong><\/a> from Indian Agent &#8211; <strong>(not legislated but a policy created in 1885 and abandoned in 1951)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>enforced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictinc.ca\/blog\/indian-act-and-enfranchisement-of-indigenous-peoples\"><strong>enfranchisement<\/strong><\/a> (loss of status rights) of any First Nation admitted to university \u00a0<strong>(1876-1985)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>could expropriate portions of reserves for roads, railways and other public works, as well as to move an entire reserve away from a municipality if it was deemed expedient; <strong>1876 to <\/strong><strong>1985 (revised in the current version of the Indian Act)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>could lease out uncultivated reserve lands to non-First Nations if the new leaseholder would use it for farming or\u00a0pasture <strong>1918-1985<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>forbade First Nations from forming political organizations <strong>1927-1951<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>prohibited anyone, First Nation or non-First Nation, from soliciting funds for First Nation legal claims without special license from the Superintendent General.
