This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is of the Hofer Brewing Company of LaSalle. This image was taken in 1927 by professional photographer A. W. Spurgeon. It opened on Front Road near the Detroit River in either 1924 or 1925 to take advantage of prohibition by exporting beer to the United States. The brewery was only in business for about 15 years, after prohibition ended in 1934 and re-entry of the larger brewing company in Canada and the United States, Hofer Brewing could not compete and closed its doors in 1939. The building still stands today at 392 Front Road in LaSalle, and is used as a County Market. There has been proposals for repurposing the structure for other uses, but to date nothing has come to fruition.
