THROWBACK THURSDAY

With the recent announcement of Windsor City Council that former Sandwich, Windsor and Amherstburg Streetcar 351 will be moving to the foot of Caron Avenue on the riverfront as part of the Legacy Beacon project. Streetcar 351 is an acknowledgement of the roll Windsor played in this new form of transportation in the late 19th century, when the first electric streetcar in Canada started operations in 1886. This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is of that very first streetcar taken on Sandwich Street in front of the British American Hotel. The line ran between Windsor and Walkerville along Sandwich Street East (today Riverside Drive East). This single line would evolve into a regional streetcar system that would reach all the way from Amherstburg to Tecumseh. The last streetcar line was shut down in Windsor in 1939 when the system was converted to busses.
