This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is of a Windsor Steam Fire Engine. This photograph was taken sometime in the 1870s. The volunteer firefighters are assembled on and around the fire engine, with Captain Mark Richards holding a megaphone (fourth person from the right). This was one of the original fire engines the fire department purchased, after a number of earlier fires had shown that the ‘bucket brigade’ was not up to the task of putting out fires. The original fire hall was located on Sandwich Street (Riverside Drive E.) between McDougall Street and Windsor Avenue.
