THROWBACK THURSDAY

Do you remember going downtown to shop? This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is looking north along Ouellette Avenue toward the river. This photograph was taken in 1967 before Devonshire Mall was built and downtown was still the primary shopping destination in Windsor. Retail stores identified in this photo include, Dollard Discount, Jeanne Bruce Jeweller, George H. Wilkinson Shoes, Red Robin, Calhou’s Hats and Charles Shoe Clinic. In the 52 years since this photograph was recorded, this scene has greatly changed with downtown evolving into an entertainment district mostly made up of restaurants and clubs. If you are interested in viewing more historic images of Windsor housed in your Community Archives, please visit our digital exhibit “Windsor’s History and Pictures” at http://heritage.windsorpubliclibrary.com/.
