This Saturday September 28 is the Grand Opening of Windsor Public Library’s newest location in Sandwich, the John Muir Branch. This week’s Throwback Thursday Pic is of the old Windsor Fire Station No. 6 taken in 1963. Located at 363 Mill Street, the former fire hall was built in 1921 as the Sandwich Fire Station. In 1935 the Sandwich Fire Station was merged with the Windsor Fire Department with amalgamation of Municipalities of Sandwich and Windsor. It closed in 1964 when the new fire hall was built on College Avenue. The former fire station served a variety of other functions such as a detoxification centre and as an artist studio. After extensive renovations, this historic building has been reincarnated as west end’s newest public library.
