The First Baptist Church of Sandwich is the oldest black church in the Windsor area and is this week’s Throwback Thursday picture. This photograph was taken in June 1986, showing the entrance of the church which is located at 3652 Peter Street. The church was founded by escaped and freed slaves in the early 19th Century. Construction started in the 1840s and it was completed in 1851, replacing a log cabin church constructed in the 1820s. Today the church is still active and an important part of the Town of Sandwich’s past and present.
