Adult Literacy Program

Who we are

The Windsor Public Library's Adult Literacy Program works with adults who require basic reading, writing and computer skills.

The Adult Literacy Program was formed in September 1980. It was the result of a task force done by the Windsor Public Library showing a great need for this program. In Windsor there are 30,000 people whose reading skills are too limited to deal with most written material that is part of everyday life. Simple things that readers take for granted such as reading a prescription or filling out an application for employment.

How You Can Help

If you can read and write, you can volunteer after participating in a twelve-hour tutor-training workshop. You will then be matched up with a learner and provided with all needed materials, including a highly-individualized training plan. This training plan will give you an idea of the learner's goals. Volunteers are required to tutor for four hours each week.

When you give the gift of time, what you get in return is priceless. Helping someone to read is really its own reward! Just ask someone who's done it.

Become A Volunteer

If you are interested in volunteering your time and skills, there are training workshops offered three times per year.

In Our Collections

All branches of the Windsor Public Library System have a separate collection of books called the Adult Literacy Collection.

The literacy office has a large collection of high-interest, low-level material used only by the people in the literacy program. Look for this sign. Literacy Logo
