Who We Are
| The Adult Literacy Program is a community-based program supporting adults (18 yrs of age and older) who want to improve their reading, writing and numeracy skills (up to about a Grade 4/5 level). | ![]() |
What we offer
- Through the contributions of trained volunteer tutors we provide free, one-on-one tutoring held at library branches convenient to both the tutor and learner. Tutoring is confidential and learner-centred.
- We also offer free weekly classes in which we teach reading, writing, numeracy and self-management skills to adults with developmental disabilities.
- Throughout the year, we hold free workplace and computer literacy classes available to our learners.
- Through training and support, we help build the skills and abilities of our volunteer tutors so that they gain confidence and fulfillment in teaching an adult to read.
Background
The Windsor Public Library’s Adult Literacy Program was formed in September 1980 as a result of a task force conducted by the Windsor Public Library showing a great need for this service.

In Windsor there are over 30,000 people whose reading skills are too limited to allow them to deal with most written material that is part of everyday life. |
Simple things that readers take for granted such as reading a prescription or filling out an application for employment are difficult for people with literacy issues. Adults who cannot read or write face difficult challenges in finding work, managing their health, raising children, and coping with simple, every-day tasks such as shopping and paying bills.

Literacy is one of the tools people can use to gain control of their lives! |
What can you do?
If you are 18 yrs of age or older and can read and write - you can help. With twelve hours of training and a commitment to volunteer for just four hours a week, you can become a Volunteer Literacy Tutor for the Windsor Public Library's Adult Literacy Program.
We will pair you with a learner and provide you with the necessary materials and skills to successfully teach an adult to read. Meeting with a learner twice a week for a two hour lesson can literally change a learner's life forever!
What you give is your time.
What you get cannot be measured.
