How does a Potential Learner get involved in a Literacy Program?
- 1) Referral from community support agencies, print ads television commercials, friends and family
- The first contact with a learner is usually established through a variety of community support agencies. This allows clients to be identified, to be informed about the different services provided by the other organizations and provided guidance.
- 2) Assessment
- Assessment allows the service providers (such as Literacy
organizations) to determine clients literacy level. Through this
process, they are sure to be provided with customized and
need-responsive training.
This step also allows determining if other services would be beneficial since literacy may represent only a small part of the training required. - 3) Training Plan Development
- As a result of assessment, a training plan is developed with each learner. This plan takes into account the steps he/she will have to complete in order to accomplish short term goals. It is customized and allows the learner to clearly recognize the different learning stages and long-term goals. This process is also instrumental in identifying the learning method most suitable for each learner.
- 4) Training
- This process provides instruction appropriate to adult learner. Training is provided on the basis of goals as identified in their training plan. This training is flexible and provides all the support needed to insure success.
- 5) Follow-up
- Follow up provides information on the learner’s situation after three to six months of participation in literacy services
