Secret Path now available on Hoopla!

The Secret Path, written by Gord Downie and illustrated by local author Jeff Lemire, is a special multi-media project dedicated towards telling the story of Chanie Wenjack. Chanie Wenjack was an indigenous Anishinaabe boy who died while running away from a residential school, hoping to reach his family 600 kilometres away. The project consists of a solo album, a graphic novel and an animated film. This is Canada’s story; every...

Can’t Wait for Seuss!

As you may have heard, a previously unpublished Dr. Seuss Book, What Pet Should I Get?, will be coming out this July. If you like children’s literature half as much as I do you can hardly wait! The book was discovered by Seuss’ widow, Audrey Geisel, in 2013 and, as at least one article suggested, the title sounds a bit like a buzzfeed article. The book features familiar some Seussian characters,...

2014: eResource Year in Review

2014. Is it just me? Or did the tablet, phone, phablet market explode this year? I used to be a gal with a purse for every occasion. I had my work purse, my school purse, my Tiger game purse, my fancy purse, my vacation purse, my running around with little kiddos purse; the list goes on, but I’ll spare you the details. This year I have come to realize that...

Try Before You Buy at Our Tech Petting Zoo

Just a few years ago, purchasing a tablet was fairly straightforward: choose Android or iOS; choose a size; choose storage capacity. BOOM. DONE. Choosing a tablet today is a little more intensive. There are several major brands to choose from (Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Kobo, Kindle – just to name a few). Some are better for reading and light browsing, some are better for gaming and movies, and some are all-in-one...

‘Tis the Season to give Tech Toys

Once upon a time, long long ago, in a pre-texting era, a friend of mine called me up and said, “We’re going shopping tonight – I’ll pick you up at 2:30 a.m., OK?” Given that we were actually taking and not texting, I couldn’t just reply with a standard wide-eyed Emoji. Who goes shopping in the middle of the night? Turns out that I had never heard of Black Friday....

Join us for Appy Hour

In our most recent social media contest, we asked people to describe their ideal library. Here are a few of the entries. Notice any trends? Since we don’t have a coffee shop in the library, we are going to do the next best thing and bring the library to the coffee shop! We’ll be at the Green Bean Café on Ouellette tomorrow night (November 13th) from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for Appy Hour....

Overdrive…It just keeps getting better and better

Why do people love eBooks so much? They’re portable. They’re lightweight. You don’t have to pick them up…or return them. The font size is adjustable. You don’t have to worry about losing your page. Really, this list could go on and on and on, but I’m not here to sell you on why you should give eBooks a try (I did a lot of that in June). If you’re already...

NOVELIST…a gold mine for fiction readers

I’d wager that most library staff (myself included) look forward to patrons asking them a version of the following question: “Read anything good lately?” That’s usually an easy one! More difficult are the questions dealing with authors or genres that we’re not familiar with or perhaps have never even heard of. “You want a viking time-travel mystery novel?”  Hmmmm, give me a sec to think about it. That’s when we...

Learning Express Library (LEL)

TOEIC; TOEFL; GED; GRE; SAT; OMG! LEL! TISA! Are you shaking your head right now and wondering what all of this means?  It’s part of a game that we play here at the library: Standardized Test or Internet Slang.  One person throws out an acronym, and the other has to guess which category it belongs to.  Fun…right? Speaking of fun (and standardized tests), Learning Express Library (one of my favourite...

New Program: App Café

“The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.” – Albert Einstein POP QUIZ: Can you name all twelve locations of the Windsor Public Library? Here’s a hint.  Wait – there are only eleven listed? Where’s the twelfth? Number twelve is the location that people sometimes forget about. It’s in your house. It’s at your work. It’s also at the gym, the mall, and any other places...

2013: E-Resources Year in Review

Our E-collection continued to get bigger and better in the year 2013.  We added two new resources: Hoopla Digital and Law Depot – and have continued to add new titles to our already popular E-Book and E-Audiobook collections.  With so many quality tablets, eReaders, and Smartphones hitting the market, it’s no wonder that we saw a 26% increase in downloads this year.  What’s so great about using the digital library?...
