Humour, Crafts, and Travelling the Galaxy

So January is done and I’ve got my first 4 books read (or mostly read). My favourite this month is definitely Man at the Helm. Stibbe’s humour is both insightful and fun.  Looking forward to next months reading! Man at the Helm by Nina Stibbe was amazing! I had the chance to read this humorous book through our Interlibrary Loan Service, and I’m glad I did! Man at the Helm was...

Saturday Crafternoon: November 22

Please join us at the Central library for one of my favourite upcycling crafts! We’ll be using recycled materials to make water bottle snowmen. We had a blast making them last year and I’m happy to be able to post a craft made by one of last year’s participants. Crafts involving recycled materials are a great way to teach children about conservation and to emphasize the importance of preserving our...

Blooms that never fade…felt flowers!

Central Library was bursting with colour this past Wednesday morning as several people joined in our monthly adult craft program. Inspired by the irises, poppies and bluebells blooming outdoors, this month we created lovely felt flowers.  These fun felt blooms were made into brooches to brighten up jackets, handbags and more!  Our next adult craft program will be June 18 from 10:30-11:30.  It will be a paper-craft session focusing on cards. See the photo below...

Make a card Saturday at the Central Library

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and what better way to celebrate mom or grandma (or any other special person) than with a handmade card. This Saturday at Central Library we’ll be “upcycling” pages from discarded books to make beautiful Mother’s Day cards to give away. As with all of our upcycling programs this craft will emphasize reusing materials to make something new. In this case we’re using books that were...

Upcoming Upcycling Saturday Craft

This Saturday we have another exciting craft in the works at the Central Library. We’ll be making cute little “robots” out of old boxes and once again turning trash into treasure. Like all of our Upcycling crafts, this uses a combination re-purposed materials – in this case cardboard – and traditional craft supplies and helps to instill values of reuse and recycling by emphasizing the continued use of items that might otherwise...

Some Fancy Fingers at WPL

Saturday was a busy day here at the Central library. Between our Upcycling Crafts program and the Get to Know Your Muslim Neighbor Day, things were bustling. The Muslim women’s group provided WPL customers and staff with all kinds of treats for all ages. The women brought in some authentic cuisine including the best samosas I’ve ever tasted, applied some beautiful henna tattoos to WPL staff and customers, and demonstrations...

Join Us for Upcycling on Saturday at Central

We’ve been making crafts all winter here at Central library and this Saturday we’ll be making butterflies out of recycled materials to celebrate spring’s long-awaited arrival. Previous programs have used packing materials, water bottles, greeting...
