THROWBACK THURSDAY

This week’s Throwback Thursday picture was taken in 1949, and is looking north along Pelissier Street just north of Wyandotte Street. The building in the centre of the frame is the old YMCA building which was built in 1926 and closed as a “Y” in the early 1990s when a new facility was opened on Victoria Avenue. Today this building has been converted to apartments. The Norton Palmer Hotel building located to the right of the YMCA was one of Windsor premier hotels. Opened in 1927 and closed in 1974 and demolished in the late 1970s. Today, Victoria Park Place condo apartments now stands in this location. If you are interested in this or other historic images of Windsor please visit the digital exhibit “Windsor’s, History and Pictures” at http://heritage.windsorpubliclibrary.com/index.php.

Yes I remember the YMCA. I have memories of there when I was younger did swimming lessons there .Learned how to swim & the other activities they had. It was a safe place to go. I also stayed there over night in a room you had pay to stay. The room was cheaper then a motel. Nice throwback; one that I remember.
