WPL and LeeLee Hats…warming babies’ heads one hat at a time!

If you’ve looked at the craft section of your local library branch lately, there’s a good chance you’ll notice a fair number of things checked out. There seems to be something about this time of year that brings out the “crafty” in people. Perhaps it stems from the urge to start the year off with a new hobby or project. The blustery weather also lends itself to cozy images of knitting or quilting with a mug of tea nearby. Whatever the reason, January seems like a good time to pick up some knitting needles, a crochet hook or a loom and get started on something!

pile-of-yarn-smallerWith that in mind, we’ve decided to renew our focus on a program that we’ve been offering here at WPL for awhile: our Knit/Looming Groups hosted by LeeLee Hats! Started in 2010, LeeLee Hats is a local non-profit group that donates handmade hats to babies in hospitals with a focus on those in neonatal intensive care units. They have so far donated almost 29,000 hats to hospitals in Windsor, Leamington, Sarnia, Chatham, and Detroit. LeeLee Hats clubs meet in many places across Windsor and Essex County. WPL has proudly been hosting clubs at its Central and Fontainebleau branches for two years and is excited to expand this family-friendly program into two additional branches. Here are the details:

Central Library: Saturday, March 8
Fontainebleau Library: Saturdays, January 18 & March 15

Is this program is still operating? My elderly Mother has made dozens of newborn hats. Is there somewhere she can donate them? If so, please provide details. Thank you in advance.
