Splendid words before an appreciative audience describes a poetry event entitled, “Many Voices, Many Lands”, held this past Saturday at the Central Branch.
Marty Gervais, Poet Laureate for the City of Windsor, got things rolling with his analysis of poetry as a form of storytelling. He encouraged everyone to be curious about life and to save family stories. Three of his poems from a recent collection were then shared. Following Mr. Gervais, other local residents took the mic to present poems of their own creation or from a favourite author. Recitations in Nepali, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, and Spanish had us all listening attentively. Romantic love, love of one’s homeland, appreciation of a new home, appreciation of teachers, memories and nature formed the subject matter.
The program was co-produced by the New Canadians’ Centre of Excellence and the Windsor Public Library. Many thanks to all who contributed.
