Every year there is a list of books that are turned into blockbuster sensations when they hit the theatres. 2016 is a year that will see some of our favourite thrillers, romances, and fantasy novels adapted for the silver screen. Will the Hollywood version blow us away like The Godfather did? Or will we be left desiring more like Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson’s Water for Elephants? We’ve already seen the release of the first part of the final instalment in the Divergent Series, Allegiant, which received scathing reviews. On the other hand, early 2016 saw Ryan Reynold’s star as the mercenary with the dirty mouth in Deadpool, a Marvel comic that became the highest grossing R-rated film in history. Can the others bypass this threshold or will they too suffer the all too often, “it just didn’t compare with the book”? Here is a preview of some of the most highly anticipated releases this upcoming year.
In the fantasy department we have J. K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, this November debut will be a retelling of the novel that was a household staple in every wizarding family, and was published nearly 70 years before the infamous Harry Potter picked it up to read. If FBAWTFT (title too long!) is anything like the movie versions of the Harry Potter series, we can expect that fans will be in for a great treat. It also has Colin Farrell, and we can’t really complain about that. In other fantasy releases we have Lewis Carroll’s classic Through the Looking Glass. As a follow-up to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, we will see stars such as Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska, reprise their roles as the Mad Hatter, White Queen and Alice, respectively. Hopefully we can expect that this live action feature will be a whimsical retelling that will be a joy to the viewers.
From the British author JoJo Moyes, we will see the release of Me Before You in early June. In the four years since the novel first debuted, thousands of readers have been captivated by the love story of Louisa Clark and William Traynor. After a tragic motorcycle accident Will has been left severely disabled, and now after losing her job, Lou Clark is beginning a new one taking care of Will. The mother of dragons herself, Emilia Clarke will be playing the role of Lou, and Will will be portrayed by Sam Claflin, who we might know better as Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games series. One of the movies I have the highest expectations for is The Light Between Oceans, starring Oscar nominated actors Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Set in Australia at the end of the First World War, this novel focuses on a lighthouse keeper and his wife who find a boat that drifted to shore with a baby on board. The story that follows is both fascinating and touching.
Finally, in the suspense department you can look forward to Tom Hanks reprising his role as Robert Langdon, the Harvard professor we saw 10 years ago in The Da Vinci Code. Now in Inferno, Langdon must attempt to the crack the code of yet another problem. This time it centres on Dante’s The Divine Comedy. He will do all of this with Dr. Sienna Brooks at his side, who is being played by Felicity Jones. The thriller that captivated readers last year was the The Girl on the Train, and in the fall of this year we will get to see Emily Blunt play the main character Rachel Watson. In the same routine every morning, Rachel takes the train and envisions a life for people that she observes out the window. One day this world Rachel has created will come crashing down when she witnesses something appalling on her ride. What enfolds next is a psychological thriller that has put every reader on the edge of their seat wondering what will happen next.
Are you looking forward to seeing any of these? Or are there others you’ve been anticipating? Make sure to check out our catalogue to put these titles on hold and read the novels before they hit the big screen!
