The recent judgment in appeal by the Supreme Court of Canada on the issue of physician assisted suicide should lead to more debate by the general public, members of health professions, and members of parliament. The original review by the Supreme Court on the Rodriguez case is available online, as are the backgrounders prepared by the Library of Parliament considering both Canadian and international examples. Ontario and British Columbia have issued research and policy statements on the subject of end-of-life care. Other important viewpoints include those represented by the Ontario Medical Association and the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.
For books available from the library, search using subject headings “Assisted suicide” or “Terminal care”. One book many are currently reading is Being Mortal, by Dr. Atul Gawande.
