2014: eResource Year in Review

2014. Is it just me? Or did the tablet, phone, phablet market explode this year? I used to be a gal with a purse for every occasion. I had my work purse, my school purse, my Tiger game purse, my fancy purse, my vacation purse, my running around with little kiddos purse; the list goes on, but I’ll spare you the details.

This year I have come to realize that tech toys have become the new purse. Most of us don’t just stick to one device. We’ve got one for work, one for home, one for reading, one for running, one for TV and movies, and so on. Sure, most tablets can perform all of the tasks I have just described, but it’s just not fun to run with an iPad strapped to your arm, just like it’s no picnic to read a book at the beach on a 3” screen with a nasty glare.

I know that I’m not alone in my “device for every occasion” mentality; I know this because I see all of the “toys” you guys bring in to our App Cafes, and also because WPL customers are consuming more eResources than ever. This year we saw a 39% increase in the number of eResource downloads through our library website and Apps. Thumbs-up! Hi-five! Hip-hip-hooray!

It delights us to see that you continue to enjoy Overdrive (eBooks), Mango (Language), and Hoopla (Movies & TV) as you have in years past; at the same time, we’re thrilled to find that you’re also loving the content that some of our newer additions have to offer. Press Display (global newspapers/Windsor Star), Zinio (Digital Magazines), Overdrive expanded (eReading Rooms for Kids & Teens), and Hoopla expanded (Music & eAudiobooks) all rolled out this year, and the feedback we have received on these new eResources has been great.

So what have our customers been reading, watching, listening to from our online collection this year? Here are some of the top picks.

I like the E-resources, but I wish the library kept Freegal.
That was such a great thing to have.
