Often times, in small-talk situations, people will ask me what I do for a living. When I tell them that I am a librarian, I am typically met with one of three responses:
- Really? Do people still use libraries? Can’t you get everything online?
- Oooh, cool. I’ll try to keep it down – I don’t want to get shushed.
- Wow – you must really love books then?
(Side note: I used to get asked how many cats I own, but ever since Taylor Swift made owning cats cool again, that question does not surface nearly as often.)
Although questions 1 & 2 can be quite fun to entertain, question 3 is by far and away my favourite, as it usually leads into a conversation about books. To answer the question, YES! I DO LOVE BOOKS! ALL THE BOOKS! In fact, one of the best things about being a librarian is having so many different outlets to talk about books.
Earlier today, a good friend and I were discussing a very interesting read that I stumbled across this past weekend. In the midst of this good old-fashioned book talk, it somehow surfaced that I have never read a vampire book! NEVER! No Anne Rice, no Dracula…not even Twilight! I do try to read a good mix of genres, but when it comes to this one, I have stayed far, far away. Why? Vampires make me think of Halloween, and Halloween makes me think of scary movies, scary costumes, ghosts, spiders, the dark, the gross, and pretty much every other thing on this planet that I have classified as nightmare-inducing.
I’m not sure whether it was our talk, or that I’m feeling inspired by Halloween (hey, there’s a first time for everything), but I’m really starting to think that I should expand my horizons and give something vampire-y a try. I have seen the way these books fly off the shelves, so clearly there is something to them that I have been missing out on.
My dilemma now is where do I begin? There are so many to choose from! Of course I could check out Novelist, or one of the other cool reader’s advisory tools that madeinwindsor blogged about a few weeks ago, but I’m thinking that it might be fun to have a little role reversal and ask YOU to make a recommendation to ME. Do you read vampire books? If you could be librarian-for-the-day, which vampire book or series would you send me home with? Why?
