October is National Vegetarian Month! This event celebrates the benefits of this increasingly popular dietary lifestyle. Whether a vegetarian yourself or if you’re interested in changing up your diet with a few meat-free dishes, this is a great month to check out the Windsor Public Library’s collection of vegan and vegetarian cookbooks.
One of my personal favorite cookbooks is Meatless. This item is almost an embarrassment of riches, offering “More Than 200 Of The Very Best Vegetarian Recipes” and each accompanied with a beautiful mouth-watering picture of the finished dish. Wonderful pastas, casseroles, small plates, full meals, and soups and stews are offered in this incredible book.
Food-lovers looking for health-conscious recipes should check out the excellent Meatless All Day. This title promises “a cookbook for anyone who loves good food that’s good for them and wants to cook in accordance with vegetarian values.” The book lists 45 healthy “power ingredients” which are featured throughout 80 delectable recipes, including Creamy Mexican Carrot Soup and Pumpkin Lasagna.
For cooks who are looking to make their diet environmentally sound, the library carries Straight From The Earth: 100 Irresistible Vegan Recipes. From the environmentally mindful folks of Earthbound Farm comes this collection of plant based recipes which are completely free of meat and dairy ingredients. These dishes are creative (and delicious), listing a diverse range of meals from Quinoa Banana Skillet Bake to Very Chocolately Chocolate Brownies.
Those who are just getting into a vegetarian diet or who are wanting to know how to start might want to check out Planet-Based Diet for Dummies. Don’t let the title get to you, this book is a great introduction to the concepts and benefits of a vegetarian diet. It provides recipes, useful tips for foods to pick, possible meat substitutions, and guides on the best ways to get the maximum nutrition needed from a plant-based diet.
Finally, what better way to celebrate National Vegetarian Month than with a party? Vegetarian Dinner Parties teaches readers how to make amazing modern vegetarian and vegan dishes (some personal favorites are the Sweet Pea Samosas and the Warm Vegan Donuts) and provides instructions for how to best place the selected dishes in a 3-course dinner party.
Whether you are already a die-heart veggie lover or are looking to put more meatless dishes in your meal plans, check out WPL’s collection of amazing vegetarian cookbooks. Happy National Vegetarian Month!
